Devlog #01 - Finding and Making Game Assets as a Solo Developer

Welcome to my first “real” devlog post after making the original announcement for Locked-Up Onahole! Today, I’ll be going over some of the things I’m working on behind the scenes.

As part of my game development process, I occasionally go out and find game assets I can use. This includes things like sound effects, music, and background images. I’ve slowly been amassing a library of reusable assets so I don’t have to keep searching for them every time I start a new project.

For the most part, the assets I use are either royalty-free or require some form of credit in-game. As a solo developer, using online resources to shorten the amount of work done is paramount. For any of the assets I pay for, it’s usually because it’s high-quality and trying to replicate it would be hard to do on my own.

Sound Effects

There are a lot of resources online that provide royalty-free sound effects that are perfect for pretty much any game out there. freesound.org has a bunch, and is my go-to for when I’m starting my search. With some software on your end, you can make adjustments to these sounds to customize them any way you like!

For any and all “adult” sounds, I highly recommend the OpenNSFW series of sound packs. They’re all high-quality and really enhance the game experience.

Music

I’ve had great success finding good music through Pixabay and the occasional game asset pack through Humble Bundle. These are often royalty-free or just require the inclusion of credits in your game project.

Backgrounds

I use a mix of images from iStock and my own semi-amateur photography to get just the right background I need. Once I get the photo I need, I run it through some basic color correction and a filter, and it’s perfect for use in visual novels! Here’s a few examples:

This process will probably change as I learn to experiment more and more with photo editing, but its been fun doing it so far. I’ll go over how I color correct/filter in a future blog post.

At this point I have virtually all of the background and sound effects I need, and am working on finding the right music for Locked-Up Onahole. Once everything is assembled, I’ll be working with my artist on making the best part of any visual novel - the CGs! These really make your story come to life, and I’m lucky to have found some talented individuals for Locked-Up Onahole and future projects coming in the future.

That’s all for now. Thanks for reading!
